In a few days the biggest party in the world will start. At least that's how they call Oktoberfest! Everyone in Munich will have a great excuse to be drunk from 17th of September till 3rd of October. Normally this annual festival lasts 16-18 days, including the first Sunday in October. Last year I was there for its anniversary in 2010 - the 200th Oktoberfest.
From the very morning the area named Theresienwiese is full of people. Most of them dressed like centuries ago - in a traditional leather shorts Lederhosen and dirndl style dress. Seems like a time machine is working.
I don't think that Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen could imagine how famous their tradition will become. Everything started in 1810 during the marriage celebration of those guys. The party was so merry that they decided to repeat it again and again.
And until today the tradition to gather in October for festival attracts beer lovers from everywhere. Statistics display that last year 6.4 million of people attended this event. Quite a number, taking into account the total area of Theresienwiese (42 hectares).
