Lovin' Life Festival 2010 - Gettin' into it, not out of it!

by Maire Garvey
(Sligo, Ireland)

Lovin' Life Festival

Lovin' Life Festival

Lovin’ Life is a unique festival aimed at celebrating life in an alcohol and drug-free environment. Through music, cinema, sport, comedy and theatre Lovin’ Life will show the enormous potential to live life to the full - without mood-altering substances.

It is a festival for people looking for a different emphasis and a different way of socialising and will attract those in recovery or struggling with addiction or trying to support family and friends who may be addicted.

We are inviting participation from a wide range of people; not to preach or prescribe but to inspire and encourage. We hope that a variety of voices and experiences, participating both through debate and craic, will enable many people to see that ‘gettin’ into it is preferable to gettin’ out of it!

We believe that this is a festival whose time has come. It will allow people from all walks of life, who have been touched by alcohol or drugs, to come together to question and debate some of the underlying assumptions about alcohol and drugs and their role in Irish society.

It will also offer a chance to relax and enjoy late night coffee shops with music, a family picnic on Ben Bulben, a Monster Ceili/How-down, a fantastic parade celebrating life in all its guises, a Music Stage featuring some great acts, a comedy night, a film club featuring new films on the theme of addiction by young film-makers, a Festival Night Club with a difference, and much, much more. But the pubs will also be open for those who want to enjoy a bevy after the festival events are over.

The 2010 Festival is only the first of what is intended to be an annual event. It is the first of its kind not just in Ireland, but in the world. It is a highly original concept that has attracted interest and support from a diverse group of people. The Festival sets out to show that it is possible to have fun and enjoy festival activities without the addition of alcohol or drugs, though it is not an anti-drink festival.

Lovin' Life 1-4 July 2010, Sligo, Ireland.

It is for anybody looking for a different way of socialising, including those in recovery from or struggling with addiction or dealing with somebody in their lives who is addicted, or anybody who wants to experience a festival without the necessary inclusion of mood-altering substances.
