History Up to 90,000 people attend over the week. The African Roots Festival of 1983 was it’s inception. In 1987 the Melkweg organised the festival as Amsterdam was crowned capital of culture and the term "world music" was born.

Exact location The festival is on walking distance (10 min) nearby train station Muiderpoort, metro station Weesperplein and the trams 3, 7 en 9 stop at the park. There is free car parking on Sunday but we advice you to come by public transport.Where to drink / smoke Well Amsterdam’s bars, nightclubs and cafes need no introduction. Perhaps that is the reason why it is difficult to recommend any specific one ! They are all over the centre of the city – happy hunting.
