Rijeka Carnival
When & Where The Rijeka Carnival is in Rijeka, Croatia. This festival usually occurs mid-late January. Also known as karneval/carnaval and to locals as maškare. In 2010 the dates are 22nd & 30th January and February 6th.
What to expect Concerts, all night parties and bell ringers wearing sailor shirts. Before the beginning of Lent, every town in the region of Kvarner burns its own effigy, called "mesopust". Mesopust is blamed for all the bad events of the previous year. Men also wear animal heads in an attempt to scare away the Winter- it works ! Getting there Fly direct to Rijeka International airport or go by by rail.
