Kanamara Matsuri Festival

What to Expect Lots of bandana sporting locals parading a giant penis around the streets gyrating it up and down, in and out to the rhythmic beats of their songs. The parade leads to the Kawasaki Daisha Temple and there's lots of afternoon events including an afternoon auction where radishes (penis shaped ones) are auctioned off. The celebrations carry on into the night in most of Kawasakis clubs. It's a great time to visit Kawasaki & Japan as it is also around the Hanami Cherry Blossom Festival.

History of Kanamara Matsuri

This Japanese festival celebrates a statue of a penis which Geisha / prostitutes prayed to in the 17th Century to protect them from Sexually transmitted diseases.

Legend has it that a demon hid inside a young girl and castrated two young men on their wedding nights. In response to this a local blacksmith fashioned an iron phallus that was used to break the demon’s teeth, leading to the enshrinement of the big metal penis.

Nowadays this penis festival is used to raise awareness & money for HIV research.
