When & Where The Float Festival Kyoto is an Asian festival which takes place on the 17th July in Shijo Dori in Kyoto, the Osaka Prefecture in Japan. It’s on for a few weeks but try to get there for the middle of July.
What to Expect Lots of Yamaboko floats paraded by Kimono sporting locals. These 10 ton floats take 40 people 5 days to build. They are then purified in the river befor the celebrations kick off.
The most reverred of locals is the boy-leader: Chigo is the star of the show and sits aloft the float with the town at his mercy !

History of Gion Matsuri
This Japanese festival dates back to 869AD when 66 representatives marched trough Kyoto to confront Tenno: The God of the Plagues. Their success bred a celebration with Yamaboko floats throughout Kyoto in Osaka.
