Critical Mass on Bicycle - When & Where This festival occurs in cities throughout the world this is a bicycle gathering, sometimes spontaneous, sometimes 'sorta' planned. The most well known Mass's are in New York and London. Sometimes they are once a month, once a year and any amount in between. Popular days to gather are April 22 (Earth Day) and September 22 (International Car Free Day). Budapest estimated 80,000 people participated in their Critical Mass no Earth Day 2008.
Critical Mass's are NOT bicycle protests, for legal purposes they are labeled as spontaneous gatherings.
What to expect Depends what city you're in. The most common feature of the festival is a tactic known as 'corking' this is when cyclists ride in convoy throughout the cities, causing a traffic jam and guaranteeing a symphony of car horn. There's usually after parties if you ask around.
History of Critical Mass Stockholm, Sweden in the early 1970's hosted the first bicycle protests but the ride was formally founded in 1992 in San Francisco CA with the idea of drawing attention to how unfriendly the city by the bay was to cyclists.
Add a Critical Mass Worldwide to this website. Send it around & riders can comment & rate your mass.
