Binche CarnavalWhen & Where This European festival the Binche Carnaval usually takes place in the town of Binche in Belgium on Fat Tuesday / Mardi Gras.

The Binche Carnaval 2010 takes place the 14th, 15th & 16th February.

What to Expect Locals dress up in fancy costumes wearing bizarre masks with green eyes: Gilles. They weave their way through the crowds armed with baskets full of oranges. Yes, they pelt you with oranges. But unlike the Ivrea Orange Throwing Carnival you are forbidden from retaliating.

History

This European festival dates back almost 200 years, the pelting of oranges was seen as a gift promising a good harvest and hence the "no throw backs" policy.
